Banana Bread Bars

I’m a fan of granola and protein bars, quick, filling, and usually pretty tasty. However, bars can be extremely high in sugar and loaded with icky ingredients we don’t want or need. I enjoy experimenting with baking but I’m usually not allowed to because it tortures all the dieters in my hose. I’m excited to try out granola bars, hopefully they will be a hit and I won’t get punished for baking another dessert. From the looks of the recipe for banana bread bars which you can find here, it looks tasty and filling and not too fattening. That’s also another problem with bars, bars are made for small, easy snacks for athletics, they are high in carbs and protein which I don’t necessarily need during 3rd period english.

Easy Peasy Mac n’ Cheesy

Tonight a good pal of mine came to my residence to share the meal of dinner with me. She goes by Kogevinas, Mary Laura; or just Mary-Laura. Since she is visiting from her homeland of Siberia, I decided to expose her to the wonderful world of macaroni and cheese. What better way to make food than from the box? Dump some water in a pot, light a match, and pour in your noodles. Wait 8 minutes, taste test, and wallah! Your noodles are ready to be sprinkled with cheesy powdered and splashed with milk and butter. I’ve always been a fan of Kraft mac n’ cheese, but tonight we went with Annie’s. It’s whole grain which is somewhat healthier and said to be organic. Annie’s makes a variety of mac n’ cheese, we made “Bunny Pasta with Yummy Cheese” now that’s what I call advertising! Girl Scout Cookies All Year Round

Ah, it’s the time of the year for stocking up on our favorite cookies. I personally think Girl Scout Cookies are overrated, but I was once a Girl Scout and remember the conniving competition of selling the most boxes so I do purchase several boxes a year. For the non Girl Scouts I think it’s the excitement of young, cute entrepreneurs and that you can only buy them once a year. My family loves the cookies and girl scouts so we buy tons of boxes and fill our freezer, unfortunately it doesn’t last throughout the entire year. For those of you who do the same, don’t worry, you can make your favorite cookies in your home 365 days a year. My favorite cookie is the Samoa, chocolate, caramel, and coconut on a thin cookie, yum. Click here for a recipe to make scrumptious Samoas.

Don’t worry, I didn’t forget about the classic Thin Mint, click here for the recipe.

I have yet to try these recipes myself, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they were better! Comment below with your results!

Does an Apple a Day REALLY Keep the Doctor Away?

I love apples, they are great in desserts, juices, with peanut butter, cinnamon, or just alone! Studies show apples prevent cancer, tooth decay, and heart diseases. Apple has substances called phytonutrients, and these phytonutrients prevents neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinsonism.  Many people don’t know how good apples are for you, they may be high in sugar but they are low in calories  and loaded with vitamins. Apples are a delicious way to intake your daily dose of essential vitamins. You will be able to get the benefits of these properties individually with other fruits, but an apple combines everything and makes it simpler. The juice of the apples has properties that can kill up to 80% of bacteria. So there you have it, an apple a day also keeps the dentist away! Eating apples is part of balanced and healthy diet than will increase your longevity, so why not have an apple a day.

Here are nine reasons to eat an apple a day!

If you don’t like plain apples, here are recipes to incorporate them in!

Vitamin Water is not so Vital

Is Vitamin Water good for you or should you be drinking something else? Recently I’ve realized how high the sugar content is in fruit juices and sodas. Although Vitamin Water seems to be somewhat healthier than most fruit juices, I did some research on the drink. My results were not surprising, basically Vitamin Water is a better alternative than soda and most processed fruit juices, but still contains many calories and unwanted chemicals. I drink Vitamin Water on occasions, I try to stick with water but the light, refreshing taste of the drink is satisfying every once and a while. My favorite flavor is the dragon fruit, also known as power-c. Each flavor has different vitamins or supposedly helps with boosting energy or concentration. Who really knows if the delicious kiwi strawberry drink helps you focus, I think it’s more of a placebo effect. Anyways, to wrap this thing up, Vitamin Water is fine to drink once and a while, but don’t rely on the fruity, sugary drink for your vitamin intake.

Starbucks for Less Bucks!

This is to all you Starbucks addicts out there who’s obsession is doing damage to your wallets. Starbucks is extremely convenient when in a hurry in the morning, or perfect for an airport pick me up, but most drinks are easy to copy in your own home for way cheaper. I’ve never been a coffee person so please no hate mail if I’m wrong about the easiness of replicating Starbucks at home. I love to get a refreshing iced tea on a hot day, but I’d rather save the $4 and get a smoothie. My favorite teas are the Tazo Green Tea, and the lemonade Passion Fruit Tazo Tea. You can purchase these teas at most grocery stores, or even Starbucks. For $3.49 you get 20 bags, for $3.49 at Starbucks you get one bag with three cups of water. My point is, Starbucks is great when in a hurry, but if you’re interested in saving money (who isn’t) and have the time, check out one of these recipes and try to make your own cup of love. Remember, everything tastes better when you make it.

Numnums Nobu!

This weekend I took a day trip to LA with my boyfriend’s family to watch the LA Open. I don’t know much about golf and find it quite boring but I guess it was a good learning experience. Towards the end I was tired and hungry, everyone could tell I was cranky. When I heard we were having dinner at Nobu, my ears perked up and I was suddenly in a better mood. It’s no surprise my nickname in their family is “big gurl”… I’ve been a few times before but my rumbling stomach and parched throat really made my tail wag. I don’t think that’s a common expression but I was heading in the direction of cute hung puppy. Anyways, all the times I’ve been there I’ve been extremely impressed, the food is out of this world. Literally things you would never find anywhere else, your tastebuds will forever love you <3. Not only is the food to die for, but the atmosphere of the restaurant is so fun and welcoming. The staff are all beautiful with angelic voices and glowing complexions. If you haven’t been, on your next road trip to LA, set aside a special Nobu fund, it may be a large check but the experience is well worth it. I guess I’ve gone on raving about the restaurant and forgot to mention what to order, honestly close your eyes and put your finger down and just order it, you won’t regret it.

Ice Cream Results

When I sat down and read the recipe, I realized how long and complicated the process was so I ended up using this easier recipe but it still took 9 hours. I may or may not have developed arthritis in my right hand from holding an electric mixer for 30 minutes… Make sure you check the amounts in the ingredients you buy so you don’t end up taking a second trip to the market like I did. The freeze time took longer than expected so I stayed up to 12:30 waiting to layer the finished product in the jar. I found an old purple jar that I thought was perfect for Valentine’s Day and wrapped a gold ribbon around it. I layered the chocolate, cookie dough, chocolate chips, then vanilla on top. I did this over and over until it was full. At the very top, I put a heart in chocolate chips. The taste didn’t exactly meet my expectations, but it’s the thought that counts I guess. If you have any tips on homemade ice cream, comment below so my hopes and dreams aren’t completely crushed. Have a lovely Valentine’s Day!

Treats For Your Valentine

If your valentine is anything like mine, the way to their heart is through food. Whenever I fight with my boyfriend, he returns with a burrito or blenders and I’m immediately in a better mood, it’s almost annoying. For Valentine’s Day, all my boyfriend wants is a pint of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. Tonight I am going to challenge my cooking skills and attempt to make homemade cookie dough ice cream for him. I found the recipe on pinterest as always, check it out here.  Just incase things go terribly wrong, I am baking backup treats to present with my gift. I’m planning on making Nutella banana cream pie cookies.. I’ve never had them or even heard of them but the title contains two of my favorite things. Check out the recipe here! Follow up on tomorrows blog post to find out my results!
