My moms specialty is breakfast foods. Not so much pancakes and waffles, but she makes delicious breakfast burritos and sandwiches. I woke up a little melancholy Sunday so she whipped me up a bagel sandwich and my favorite fruits. She toasted a fresh everything bagel from Jack’s and put cheese, egg, and ham on it. Then she sliced up some strawberries, a kiwi, and mango. The bagel was delicious but I would have added some cream cheese, I’m a huge cream cheese fan. The breakfast definitely cheered me up and I really like my mom.  I encourage you to try to make your own breakfast bagel sandwich, get creative with different types of bagels or cheeses. My ideal bagel sandwich is an onion bagel with cheese, egg, avocado, tomato, bacon, and ketchup on the side. If you aren’t very good in the kitchen, don’t fret, you can buy this at Jack’s bagels.

Starbucks – The Hazelnut Frap Sucks

On Sunday I had to work on an English project and have a hard time focusing at home so I went to Starbucks. I’m not a big coffee drinker but I wanted to try a new frappuccino. The “Hazelnut” was the first listed and had “new” next to it so I just went for it. The whip cream and caramel drizzle makes the drink look very appetizing. I was excited until I took the first sip which tasted like buttered popcorn jellybeans. Thank god I got some coffee cake to absorb the awful flavor. I went on this homework excursion with my friend Ryan and he ordered a cinnamon roll which was a good call but still didn’t beat the coffee cake. Next time you go to Starbucks, I do not recommend ordering the Hazelnut Frappuccino unless you like the booger flavored Harry Potter jellybean; however do order the coffee cake!

Chocolate Chip Pancakes

It was a rough morning at my grandpa’s house, the morning after he passed away the phone would not stop ringing. No one had eaten because they were constantly answering phone calls. I decided to cheer everyone up by making pancakes. My mom actually did most of the work because I was laying on the couch but I added chocolate chips and flipped the cute little cakes. I don’t really like pancakes but I like to make them and watch people eat them. I also enjoy the smell of the kitchen, it’s a good start to a morning. I’ve never made pancakes from scratch, I usually just use bisquick powder. Thanks to pinterest, I found a recipe that looks well worth the extra time and clean up. This song puts me in a great mood and gives me an instant energy boost. The music video is unexpected for the song but you’ll most likely end up watching it a couple times. INGREDIENTS

2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
2 cups buttermilk
1-1/2 cups chocolate chips
1/2 cup salted butter, melted and cooled slightly

Strawberries n’ Cream

One of my favorite snacks/dessert is strawberries with whipped cream. Not only is it delicious, it’s low calorie, best of both worlds. Even making this dynamic duo into a strawberry shortcake is still low calorie. But I’m not a fan of the spongy angel cake, if you haven’t tried it don’t let my criticism stop you. I’ve not given up all hope on angel food cake, I have yet to experiment and make it from scratch. Homemade is always better than store bought, especially with cakes. Check out this recipe to make your own strawberry shortcake. This recipe is great for amateur bakers and it’s low cost. Not only is a great dessert, it’s completely appropriate for breakfast. Next time you are cooking breakfast in bed for someone special, I’m sure they would be delighted to see this presented on a tray. I know I would want that.

Breakfast Burritos for Dinner

Last night was Thursday night and my mom went to go party in IV so I was left home alone to starve. At around 8:30 I gave in to my cooking strike and trekked out to the kitchen. Scanning the fridge for food, the wide variety of vegetables were useless and the 7 types of mustard just made me mad. Suddenly, a bag of flour tortillas caught my eye, I was now on a mad search for cheese. I was in luck, some Mexican blended cheese was just what I needed. When I look at my one tortilla and cheese I was sad they would be so lonely so I decided to get creative. I whipped up some eggs and scrambled them, I laid them on the warm tortilla and sliced avocado into it. My favorite seasoning is garlic salt and add it whenever there is avocado on something. I sprinkled some on and dipped it in ketchup. My breakfast burrito wash short lived but will always remain in my heart. Breakfast burritos are quick, easy, and a good source of protein! If you want to get extra creative, try adding some bacon and tomato!

Cuddling with Coffee Cake

On this wonderful Friday, my angelic mother blessed me with the gift of coffee cake. My mom leaves before I do so she puts my breakfast in my car. This morning was extra special, I opened the door and mystical things filled my nose; I knew it was the long awaited coffee cake. For some reason, my mom really loves me and wakes up extra early to slave in the kitchen. This morning was a perfect morning for this chunk of sugar and cinnamon. The melting cake in my mouth distracted me from the fact it was so foggy I couldn’t see the bottom of my driveway. If you are interested in making someone’s morning, or just your own, I can’t promise you my mothers recipe but check out some of these below! Smoothie Extravaganza

I’ve already spilled my secret smoothie smoothie recipe (pun intended), but I’m here to share more recipes. I could drink smoothies for every meal if my mom would let me.  My mom tries to limit my smoothie intake to one a day because of my “acidity intake,” probably just an excuse to not slave for me and make me food. Smoothies are a great on the go meal to fill you up and provide you with energy and vital vitamins. I love raw veggies, but for those of you who are grossed out by greens, put them in your smoothie, you won’t even taste them!  If you drink fruity smoothies, I dare you to had a handful or two of spinach, punch me if you taste it.

Gaga for Gluten Free

Gluten free diets have become very common. This may be because many people are learning they are allergic to gluten, treating Celiac disease, or because people have realized it’s a healthy diet. Dieting can be extremely difficult, I’ve failed every time because I don’t have strong self control, but I think I could succeed in gluten free eating. Gluten is found in grains such as wheat, barley, rye and triticale (a cross between wheat and rye). It may sound simple, but you’d be surprised how often wheat is incorporated into food. Gluten free means no pasta, bread, cakes, sauces, cookies, the list goes on. Don’t stop reading now, they make all these things gluten free! Because so many people have taken up this diet, many people have experimented with gluten free cooking. I’ve tried many products, in fact, I prefer gluten free pretzels rather than regular ones! Like all diets, you have to take precaution in getting all your necessary vitamins and minerals. Gluten free is a healthy lifestyle that everyone should attempt, our bodies don’t need wheat. Before setting your New Year’s resolution as eating gluten free, you should test out some recipes and gradually switch over. Check out some of these recipes to start making today!

Bonkers for Breakfast

Mornings are an important part of your day, a rough morning can ruin your it, especially when you are hungry until lunch. Breakfast gives our bodies nutrition and substance. This is where our energy comes from. Think about it, breakfast is the meal after dinner. We eat dinner then sleep through the night. That’s eight or more hours with out eating. Our bodies need to be nourished in the morning. They’ve gone without for hours. If we do not eat in the morning our bodies will not be able to produce the energy we need for the day. Studies show people who eat breakfast are able to focus much better. All families should wake up ten minutes earlier to eat breakfast together, everyone is so busy it’s easy to forget to update each other on your lives. Just recently I’ve started to like average American breakfast foods such as pancakes, waffles, etc. My heart goes out to those that skip breakfast due to the distaste in food. Starbucks for Less Bucks!

This is to all you Starbucks addicts out there who’s obsession is doing damage to your wallets. Starbucks is extremely convenient when in a hurry in the morning, or perfect for an airport pick me up, but most drinks are easy to copy in your own home for way cheaper. I’ve never been a coffee person so please no hate mail if I’m wrong about the easiness of replicating Starbucks at home. I love to get a refreshing iced tea on a hot day, but I’d rather save the $4 and get a smoothie. My favorite teas are the Tazo Green Tea, and the lemonade Passion Fruit Tazo Tea. You can purchase these teas at most grocery stores, or even Starbucks. For $3.49 you get 20 bags, for $3.49 at Starbucks you get one bag with three cups of water. My point is, Starbucks is great when in a hurry, but if you’re interested in saving money (who isn’t) and have the time, check out one of these recipes and try to make your own cup of love. Remember, everything tastes better when you make it.
