Nutella & Strawberries

The perfect snack: Nutella and strawberries. It works for breakfast, snack, or dessert! There are many uses for Nutella, but my favorite is to dip strawberries in it. I’ve made Nutella cookies before and they came out ok but did not meet my high expectations. If you’re on a diet and your sweet tooth is about to be the death of you, don’t be scared to smear a little of this wonderful hazelnut spread on some strawberries. Though the spread contains saturated fat and sugar, it also supplies a good amount of key vitamins and minerals that you need for good health. The hazelnuts in Nutella also boost the health of your heart, making it a fairly nutritious food to not feel too guilty about. Don’t get too carried away and inhale spoonfulls, but a few tablespoons is surprisingly good for you. Isn’t there some saying like chocolate mends the heart? If you know that saying, comment below.

Mini Apple Pies

My Grandpa’s funeral was on Sunday and it was a very nice Sunday. There were many tears, but mostly from laughter. My grandpa was a pretty funny guy and surrounded himself with pretty funny people. The memorial afterward was filled with delicious foods. One of my favorite desserts was the mini apple pies. Not only were they the cutest things I’ve ever seen, but the best apple pie I’ve ever tasted. I always think of Thanksgiving when I think of apple pie, but now I will remember the time I ate mini pies with Bonnie Hunt as she told me how I should pursue acting. The miniature pies looked difficult to make but if you’re ever looking for a challenge, go get creative. Chocolate Shakes and Quesadillas

A good after school snack is always a great way to lift your spirits on a stressful day. This Tuesday was especially rough because it was not even half way through the week of dreaded STAR testing. I was driving my friend Ryan home from school and we both craved a cold milkshake. Montecito Country Club has some pretty spectacular chocolate shakes so we cruised over and slid into a booth. Along with the perfect shake, we ordered a quesadilla and ate about three baskets of chips. The warm, soft quesadilla is the perfect match with the cold, thick shake. Although it may be hard to beat MCC’s chocolate shake and quesadilla, they are both simple two ingredient meals, easy to make at home. Next time you’re feeling down, try the unusual combo of chocolate shakes and quesadillas.

Talent of Talenti

Well to begin, Talenti is the best selling gelato in the U.S. and if you haven’t tried it you are not taking full advantage of being American. Not only is it delicious, but with 30% less fat than regular ice cream, it’s also a healthier alternative. The clear containers attract the eye because it is so unusual to see ice cream in a market in anything other than cardboard. Out of the twenty three flavors, it’s hard to read a flavor and not drool. My favorite flavor is the Caramel Cookie Crunch, and I’m dying to try the Banana Chocolate Swirl and Mediterranean Mint. Although the number one gelato in the U.S, many people have not heard of this divine creation. I bet you’re upset and want to know where to purchase your first re usable container of joy. For all you Santa Barbara locals, pick up your first pint at your nearest Vons, Albertson’s, Gelson’s, the list goes on.

Craving Chocolate Chip Cookies

I’m a huge fan of homemade chocolate chip cookies. I’d way rather spend the time and mess making them from scratch than using pre-made dough. Chocolate chip cookies were the start to my baking career. My grandma was not the baking type of granny therefore my mom never made cookies either. I was on my own to create a recipe to pass on to my grandkids. In 4th grade I read the back of the Nestle’s chocolate chip bag and saw the recipe for cookies. I made the batter and fell in love, nearly died of salmonella poisoning from so much raw cookie dough. For some reason, everytime I make them they come out differently, last night I discovered the trick. I used organic raw sugar and organic brown sugar. I also used one stick of unsalted butter and one stick of salted. It’s easy to make the mistake of using two sticks of salted and the cookies taste too salty, but I like dark chocolate with salt so I add just one stick for a little extra tang. Strawberries n’ Cream

One of my favorite snacks/dessert is strawberries with whipped cream. Not only is it delicious, it’s low calorie, best of both worlds. Even making this dynamic duo into a strawberry shortcake is still low calorie. But I’m not a fan of the spongy angel cake, if you haven’t tried it don’t let my criticism stop you. I’ve not given up all hope on angel food cake, I have yet to experiment and make it from scratch. Homemade is always better than store bought, especially with cakes. Check out this recipe to make your own strawberry shortcake. This recipe is great for amateur bakers and it’s low cost. Not only is a great dessert, it’s completely appropriate for breakfast. Next time you are cooking breakfast in bed for someone special, I’m sure they would be delighted to see this presented on a tray. I know I would want that.

Cuddling with Coffee Cake

On this wonderful Friday, my angelic mother blessed me with the gift of coffee cake. My mom leaves before I do so she puts my breakfast in my car. This morning was extra special, I opened the door and mystical things filled my nose; I knew it was the long awaited coffee cake. For some reason, my mom really loves me and wakes up extra early to slave in the kitchen. This morning was a perfect morning for this chunk of sugar and cinnamon. The melting cake in my mouth distracted me from the fact it was so foggy I couldn’t see the bottom of my driveway. Last night I had a big family dinner and my Grandpa’s girlfriend made a special dessert called a trifle. We all had to guess what it was, I thought it was going to be a chocolate mousse with coffee cake; my prediction was very off. The cake was a layer of pudding, berries, vanilla cake, whipped cream, more berries, more pudding, more cake, and more cream. If it was my recipe, I would call it “berries n’ cream cake”. A special addition she adds is slivered almonds, it adds a surprising crunch to the soft, creamy pudding cake. The dish is served cold, the cake absorbs the pudding so it is soft and melts in your mouth, the explosion of a blueberry or juicy raspberry is very exciting. I didn’t get a chance to get her exact recipe, but here’s a similar one that I recommend trying! The presentation of food is important, not only is this cake beautiful but it’s delicious!

Gaga for Gluten Free

Gluten free diets have become very common. This may be because many people are learning they are allergic to gluten, treating Celiac disease, or because people have realized it’s a healthy diet. Dieting can be extremely difficult, I’ve failed every time because I don’t have strong self control, but I think I could succeed in gluten free eating. Gluten is found in grains such as wheat, barley, rye and triticale (a cross between wheat and rye). It may sound simple, but you’d be surprised how often wheat is incorporated into food. Gluten free means no pasta, bread, cakes, sauces, cookies, the list goes on. Don’t stop reading now, they make all these things gluten free! Because so many people have taken up this diet, many people have experimented with gluten free cooking. I’ve tried many products, in fact, I prefer gluten free pretzels rather than regular ones! Like all diets, you have to take precaution in getting all your necessary vitamins and minerals. Gluten free is a healthy lifestyle that everyone should attempt, our bodies don’t need wheat. Before setting your New Year’s resolution as eating gluten free, you should test out some recipes and gradually switch over. Check out some of these recipes to start making today!

Girl Scout Cookies All Year Round

Ah, it’s the time of the year for stocking up on our favorite cookies. I personally think Girl Scout Cookies are overrated, but I was once a Girl Scout and remember the conniving competition of selling the most boxes so I do purchase several boxes a year. For the non Girl Scouts I think it’s the excitement of young, cute entrepreneurs and that you can only buy them once a year. My family loves the cookies and girl scouts so we buy tons of boxes and fill our freezer, unfortunately it doesn’t last throughout the entire year. For those of you who do the same, don’t worry, you can make your favorite cookies in your home 365 days a year. My favorite cookie is the Samoa, chocolate, caramel, and coconut on a thin cookie, yum.
