Final MAD Showcase of 2013

Friday was the last MAD showcase of the year. The building was packed with MAD students, parents, and alumni. I walked through the hall and briefly looked at each picture taken by the seniors. The photography was really impressive and I hope to leave MAD with those skills. I made my way to the room where they were showing the juniors’ music videos. I’ve been waiting to watch the final products. Unfortunately, because there were so many videos and so little time, we only got to see snippets of each one. I’m really excited to make music videos next year. After watching them, I’ve been thinking of ideas for videos. After watching all of the snippets and admiring the photography, I headed over to Persona pizza with a group of girlfriends. Persona is a new restaurant located on State St. If you haven’t tried it, I would highly recommend it. Persona is unlike any pizza restaurant I’ve been to. You choose your own toppings and they make it in front of you. Overall, the MAD showcase was a great ending to the year and excited me for the projects ahead.

Thai Food: Your Place, My Place?

Last night my mom brought me some long awaited Thai food. I haven’t had Thai food in months and it’s something I strongly enjoy. I always get the sauteed chicken with peanut sauce and it’s surprisingly not that unhealthy. The chicken is skinless and a good source of protein. The peanut sauce is a bit fattening but makes the meal. It’s definitely not as enjoyable at home, the restaurant is small and dark but makes me feel out of the country. Thai food is fun to go out and eat because you can try new foods and your taste buds are in awe with all of the strange spices. The two Thai food places to eat are Your Place and My Place; very confusing when someone doesn’t know what the restaurants are and trying to plan a date. Next time you’re looking for a new restaurant and want to explore your taste buds, check out a small part of Thailand placed on Milpas St.

Sushi Sushi Sushi

On Wednesday I ate every meal with Ryan. We carpool on late starts and if we have time grab breakfast. Although it was cold we got blenders because it’s the quickest and easiest. For lunch on Wednesday we went to Habit and got burgers. Dinner was my favorite meal by far. Ryan came over after his golf practice and ordered Restaurant Connection to my house. Restaurant Connection is extremely convenient. Although we can both drive, we just wanted to sit in my room in PJs and watch TV. We used to only order burritos from Los Agaves but then we both got stomach aches and realized we liked sushi way better. My favorite roll is the eel roll and Ryan gets the rainbow roll. Ryan likes to share food which usually means he just eats mine so we ordered two eel rolls, a rainbow roll, and a side of fried rice. Because it was Restaurant Connection is ended up being $50, but it was well worth the delicious food delivered in the comfort in your own home. Next time you don’t want to leave the house but don’t feel like pizza, call Restaurant Connection!

Another Wednesday, another MAD lunch. My title is taken from the movie “It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad World”; a movie my grandpa was in that is based on a group of people who race to a box of riches. It’s extremely similar to the MAD lunches because everyone stampedes toward the much loved food. The race towards the lunch is really survival of the fittest. RIP to the weaklings who were trampled last week. This lunch was pasta, a great choice. Shout out to the mothers who make and serve the food, making fellow women proud. My favorite pasta was the bowties with pine nuts and broccoli. Next time you make pasta, try using olive oil, pine nuts, and whatever veggies appeal to you. This is much healthier than pasta with red sauce or just butter and parmesan. Comment below if you’ve seen “It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World” or if you haven’t, comment with your favorite pasta!

Rusty’s Pizza is the Pizza for You&Me

Rusty’s Pizza, a local pizza parlor, is another restaurant that beholds a special place in my heart and childhood memories. I’ve been eating this delicious greasiness for as long as I can remember. Rusty’s is the pizza I ate at every birthday party, school party, slumber party, every kind of party. I’ve also had the phone number memorized since I learned my own home number (805) 564-1111. For under $30 (including tip if you’re a good samaritan), you can get a large pizza with toppings and a six pack of cokes (I also add sides of ranch). This may seem expensive for greasy pizza, but it’s delivered in 30 minutes in the comfort of your own home. You don’t even have to get dressed to drive and pick it up, just be somewhat presentable to the pizza man. Whether you’re throwing a superbowl party or just depressed and binge eating, pick up the phone and dial up Rusty’s, they won’t let you down.

Here’s a clip from Spongebob that excites me for pizza:

Breakfast Burritos for Dinner

Last night was Thursday night and my mom went to go party in IV so I was left home alone to starve. At around 8:30 I gave in to my cooking strike and trekked out to the kitchen. Scanning the fridge for food, the wide variety of vegetables were useless and the 7 types of mustard just made me mad. Suddenly, a bag of flour tortillas caught my eye, I was now on a mad search for cheese. I was in luck, some Mexican blended cheese was just what I needed. When I look at my one tortilla and cheese I was sad they would be so lonely so I decided to get creative. I whipped up some eggs and scrambled them, I laid them on the warm tortilla and sliced avocado into it. My favorite seasoning is garlic salt and add it whenever there is avocado on something. I sprinkled some on and dipped it in ketchup. My breakfast burrito wash short lived but will always remain in my heart. Breakfast burritos are quick, easy, and a good source of protein! If you want to get extra creative, try adding some bacon and tomato!

Giannfrancos Trattoria

Last night my mom came home with another wonderful meal for me. This week has had some pretty good quality meals. She had told me she was going out to dinner and so I just laid in my bed melting because there was no food in my house besides coconut macaroons and lactose-free milk. She called me from Giannfrancos Trattoria, an Italian restaurant in Carpinteria I had never heard of. She told me to check the online menu and I was in a pickle about what to order. I couldn’t choose between The Franco and the Insalata Italiana. The salad is butterleaf lettuce topped with fresh Roma tomatoes, mozzarella, avocado, and crispy pancetta finished with olive oil and fresh lemon juice. I ended ordering The Franco pasta dish, “Dads favorite homemade top sirloin Bolognese ragù complemented with rigatoni pasta.” I don’t regret it, but considering spring break is today and I haven’t been wasting I’ve been waisting, I know I should have ordered the salad. Next time I eat there, I will definitely order the salad, reading it makes my mouth water. Check out the menu here and make reservations for you and that special someone!

All Hail Los Arroyos

My favorite  Mexican food restaurant is by far Los Arroyos. It’s not nearly as authentic or inexpensive as La Superica. In fact, it’s probably the nicest Mexican restaurant I’ve ever been to, but I’m a huge fan of their food. Although you may be thinking, Mexican food is inexpensive and all tastes the same, there is something special about Los Arroyos. Their rice and beans are extraordinary, and their steak is ugh (super Last night, my angelic mom blessed me with a baby sized burrito. I’m not saying a baby burrito, I’m saying 8 pound, 6 ouncer burrito, slathered with sour cream and guacamole. Holy moly was this burrito a day maker. It’s called the Fajita Burrito, it contains steak, cheese, black beans, and grilled bell peppers, tomatoes, and onions (rice comes on the side). There’s really nothing else I could ask for in a perfect meal. If you do take my advice and order this lovely slab, try ordering it with the rice inside, and don’t forget to get a coke with lime.

Check out their menu here!

Sandwich Fixings

Last night I was craving a BLTA (bacon lettuce tomato avocado sandwich), unfortunately the only place that serves a sandwich after 4 in Montecito is Von’s. When I got to Von’s I realized I only had five dollars so I just bought turkey and decided to get creative at home. Warning: this is not a BLT. I toasted a piece of my favorite bread, Milton’s, then smeared avocado on it. I then layered fresh, thin turkey, and slathered some mayo and mustard on it. I took a bite and realized it lacked a little flavor, so I sliced a perfect little tomato and finished with a sprinkle of garlic salt. For a lower calorie sandwich, I left out the top piece of bread. Surprisingly I save around 200 calories by leaving out the piece and using less mayo and mustard. I’m a huge sandwich fan, one of my favorites being a BLT. I don’t have the patience to cook two pieces of baking for my sandwich though (I’m against microwaved bacon). If my steps were not appealing to you, hopefully this website will inspire you to make a BLT!

Grilled Cheese &Tomato Soup, A Dynamic Duo

I don’t know who created the beautiful duo of tomato soup and grilled cheese, but they are an inseparable pair. Whenever I’m sick, my mom brings in a tray with a cup of soup and grilled cheese. Last night, she knew I wouldn’t like the dinner she made it for me. My favorite place to get the dynamic duo is Nordstrom’s Cafe. For a great price of $5.50, you get a grilled cheese, cup of tomato bisque, grapes, chips, and fresh lemonade. I am not a fan of Campbell’s canned soup, I actually can’t stand the tomato soup. Weird how I hate one type of tomato soup, yet Nordstrom’s tomato soup is one of my favorite foods. If you want to get extra creative, try making your own tomato soup. Unless you’re only recipe is cereal, I’m sure you know how to make a grilled cheese. Here’s a recipe, start cooking now!
