I like butternut squash. I love the word squash, I love the texture, the color, and the flavor (if buttered). There are many types of squash, but I don’t remember the names of other types I’ve tried so I can’t compare. I wonder if there is a squash festival, I probably wouldn’t go but I bet the people that do attend are cute and friendly and slow paced. I wouldn’t know the health benefits of squash are without Winter squash contain high levels of vitamin A that may help protect against emphysema. There’s  also a correlation between eating foods high in the carotenoid beta-cryptoxanthin, and decreased incidence of lung cancer. I highly doubt squash is going to save a dying lung cancer patient, but hey it can’t hurt. If you’re interested on reading more health benefits on squash, click here. 

I prepared my squash in 10 minutes. My mom bought the pre cut and packaged squash and I steamed it for 10 minutes. Once squishy I put some butter and salt and had a healthy snack. Try it out if you want to prevent cancer and boost your fiber levels.

I’ve been trying to eat somewhat healthy as summer is approaching. My mom eats very healthy and drinks special juices daily but tends to make me food for football players. Considering I have two big brothers, I grew up with their diets and am known to be able to inhale large amounts of food. My boyfriends family calls me “big gurl”. For an after school snack my mom made me apples, cheese, and almonds. I ate all the cheese and apples and then slowly ate the almonds until I was in almond overdose. When I want to eat but I’m not hungry, I eat raw almonds because they fill me up quickly and are not addicting. Raw almonds are filled with protein and essential vitamins. If you don’t like almonds plain, throw slivered almonds into a salad or even a smoothie. Be cautious, don’t go nutty with the nuts if you’re calorie counting because they are high in calories!

Starbucks – The Hazelnut Frap Sucks

On Sunday I had to work on an English project and have a hard time focusing at home so I went to Starbucks. I’m not a big coffee drinker but I wanted to try a new frappuccino. The “Hazelnut” was the first listed and had “new” next to it so I just went for it. The whip cream and caramel drizzle makes the drink look very appetizing. I was excited until I took the first sip which tasted like buttered popcorn jellybeans. Thank god I got some coffee cake to absorb the awful flavor. I went on this homework excursion with my friend Ryan and he ordered a cinnamon roll which was a good call but still didn’t beat the coffee cake. Next time you go to Starbucks, I do not recommend ordering the Hazelnut Frappuccino unless you like the booger flavored Harry Potter jellybean; however do order the coffee cake!

Chocolate Shakes and Quesadillas

A good after school snack is always a great way to lift your spirits on a stressful day. This Tuesday was especially rough because it was not even half way through the week of dreaded STAR testing. I was driving my friend Ryan home from school and we both craved a cold milkshake. Montecito Country Club has some pretty spectacular chocolate shakes so we cruised over and slid into a booth. Along with the perfect shake, we ordered a quesadilla and ate about three baskets of chips. The warm, soft quesadilla is the perfect match with the cold, thick shake. Although it may be hard to beat MCC’s chocolate shake and quesadilla, they are both simple two ingredient meals, easy to make at home. Next time you’re feeling down, try the unusual combo of chocolate shakes and quesadillas.

National Acai Day

This Saturday I took a weekend getaway to Veronica’s ranch in Jalama. On our way there we stopped for some breakfast. Nikki Vyn adores meat and couldn’t stop herself from getting some orange chicken from Panda Express. I knew it was the beginning of the best day ever when backyard bowls were 50% OFF! National Acai Day was a day filled with joy, acai and meat. Our trip to Jalama was probably my favorite day of the year because I got to pet horses’ noses and hug their really cute necks. There’s a special place in my heart for horses. Unfortunately, my grandma was bucked in the face as a child and forbid my mom to let me lease a horse so my riding career sadly ended at age 9. Our first trip to our magic hill was very tragic, as the horses ran away when we came close. This ways probably because Nikki was running after them calling them “trucks”, I don’t know why you would call a horse a truck because they’re obviously not trucks. Hours later they realized they belong in my arms and swarmed my car, I got to hug them and race them and kiss them. It was a great day. If you don’t like horses you should unfollow me and should go touch their noses and feed them apples.

Situation Citrus

Citrus is a critical part of people’s diets. Whether its lime, grapefruit, lemon, orange, blood orange, they all contain important vitamins. Citrus is a world loved fruit, actually a preferred taste around the world. It’s surprising how delicious yet vitamin filled a small fruit can be. Citrus is mostly known for the huge amount of vitamin c, but they are filled with tons of other important nutrients. The essential vitamins are important for normal growth and development. It is important to buy organic citrus produce because citrus trees are constantly sprayed with pesticides. Lemon is amazing for your body. It helps with weightloss, boosts your immune system, clears skin, freshens breath, and many more benefits. Adding a lemon squeeze to your water gives your body all these benefits with zero calories and refreshes you. Don’t mistake lemon water for lemonade because lemonade is loaded with sugar. Stay away from sugary citrus drinks and start squeezing your own!

The Best Bruschetta

One of my all time favorite foods is bruschetta, an antipasta from Italy originated in the 15th century. My moms recipe is french bread baked with olive oil and garlic, topped with mozzarella, basil, tomatoes, and drizzled with balsamic vinaigrette. There are many variations of this delicious snack,  I like all of them. If you want to get really fancy and impress your eaters, add some prosciutto. The bruschetta below was different than your normal Italian appetizer because my mom used bagels instead of french bread. I was nervous with how it would turn out because I love my soft yet crunchy french bread. Surprisingly, the thinly sliced bagels were delicious! The next time you are asked to bring an appetizer for a party, I promise you bruschetta will be a hit!

Banana Bread Bars

I’m a fan of granola and protein bars, quick, filling, and usually pretty tasty. However, bars can be extremely high in sugar and loaded with icky ingredients we don’t want or need. I enjoy experimenting with baking but I’m usually not allowed to because it tortures all the dieters in my hose. I’m excited to try out granola bars, hopefully they will be a hit and I won’t get punished for baking another dessert. From the looks of the recipe for banana bread bars which you can find here, it looks tasty and filling and not too fattening. That’s also another problem with bars, bars are made for small, easy snacks for athletics, they are high in carbs and protein which I don’t necessarily need during 3rd period english.

Does an Apple a Day REALLY Keep the Doctor Away?

I love apples, they are great in desserts, juices, with peanut butter, cinnamon, or just alone! Studies show apples prevent cancer, tooth decay, and heart diseases. Apple has substances called phytonutrients, and these phytonutrients prevents neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinsonism.  Many people don’t know how good apples are for you, they may be high in sugar but they are low in calories  and loaded with vitamins. Apples are a delicious way to intake your daily dose of essential vitamins. You will be able to get the benefits of these properties individually with other fruits, but an apple combines everything and makes it simpler. The juice of the apples has properties that can kill up to 80% of bacteria. So there you have it, an apple a day also keeps the dentist away! Eating apples is part of balanced and healthy diet than will increase your longevity, so why not have an apple a day.

Starbucks for Less Bucks!

This is to all you Starbucks addicts out there who’s obsession is doing damage to your wallets. Starbucks is extremely convenient when in a hurry in the morning, or perfect for an airport pick me up, but most drinks are easy to copy in your own home for way cheaper. I’ve never been a coffee person so please no hate mail if I’m wrong about the easiness of replicating Starbucks at home. I love to get a refreshing iced tea on a hot day, but I’d rather save the $4 and get a smoothie. My favorite teas are the Tazo Green Tea, and the lemonade Passion Fruit Tazo Tea. You can purchase these teas at most grocery stores, or even Starbucks. For $3.49 you get 20 bags, for $3.49 at Starbucks you get one bag with three cups of water. My point is, Starbucks is great when in a hurry, but if you’re interested in saving money (who isn’t) and have the time, check out one of these recipes and try to make your own cup of love. Remember, everything tastes better when you make it.
