Snackalack

I’ve been trying to eat somewhat healthy as summer is approaching. My mom eats very healthy and drinks special juices daily but tends to make me food for football players. Considering I have two big brothers, I grew up with their diets and am known to be able to inhale large amounts of food. My boyfriends family calls me “big gurl”. For an after school snack my mom made me apples, cheese, and almonds. I ate all the cheese and apples and then slowly ate the almonds until I was in almond overdose. When I want to eat but I’m not hungry, I eat raw almonds because they fill me up quickly and are not addicting. Raw almonds are filled with protein and essential vitamins. If you don’t like almonds plain, throw slivered almonds into a salad or even a smoothie. Be cautious, don’t go nutty with the nuts if you’re calorie counting because they are high in calories!

Breakfast for Champs

My moms specialty is breakfast foods. Not so much pancakes and waffles, but she makes delicious breakfast burritos and sandwiches. I woke up a little melancholy Sunday so she whipped me up a bagel sandwich and my favorite fruits. She toasted a fresh everything bagel from Jack’s and put cheese, egg, and ham on it. Then she sliced up some strawberries, a kiwi, and mango. The bagel was delicious but I would have added some cream cheese, I’m a huge cream cheese fan. The breakfast definitely cheered me up and I really like my mom.  I encourage you to try to make your own breakfast bagel sandwich, get creative with different types of bagels or cheeses. My ideal bagel sandwich is an onion bagel with cheese, egg, avocado, tomato, bacon, and ketchup on the side. If you aren’t very good in the kitchen, don’t fret, you can buy this at Jack’s bagels.

Chocolate Shakes and Quesadillas

A good after school snack is always a great way to lift your spirits on a stressful day. This Tuesday was especially rough because it was not even half way through the week of dreaded STAR testing. I was driving my friend Ryan home from school and we both craved a cold milkshake. Montecito Country Club has some pretty spectacular chocolate shakes so we cruised over and slid into a booth. Along with the perfect shake, we ordered a quesadilla and ate about three baskets of chips. The warm, soft quesadilla is the perfect match with the cold, thick shake. Although it may be hard to beat MCC’s chocolate shake and quesadilla, they are both simple two ingredient meals, easy to make at home. Next time you’re feeling down, try the unusual combo of chocolate shakes and quesadillas.

Breakfast Burritos for Dinner

Last night was Thursday night and my mom went to go party in IV so I was left home alone to starve. At around 8:30 I gave in to my cooking strike and trekked out to the kitchen. Scanning the fridge for food, the wide variety of vegetables were useless and the 7 types of mustard just made me mad. Suddenly, a bag of flour tortillas caught my eye, I was now on a mad search for cheese. I was in luck, some Mexican blended cheese was just what I needed. When I look at my one tortilla and cheese I was sad they would be so lonely so I decided to get creative. I whipped up some eggs and scrambled them, I laid them on the warm tortilla and sliced avocado into it. My favorite seasoning is garlic salt and add it whenever there is avocado on something. I sprinkled some on and dipped it in ketchup. My breakfast burrito wash short lived but will always remain in my heart. Breakfast burritos are quick, easy, and a good source of protein! If you want to get extra creative, try adding some bacon and tomato!

Grilled Cheese &Tomato Soup, A Dynamic Duo

I don’t know who created the beautiful duo of tomato soup and grilled cheese, but they are an inseparable pair. Whenever I’m sick, my mom brings in a tray with a cup of soup and grilled cheese. Last night, she knew I wouldn’t like the dinner she made it for me. My favorite place to get the dynamic duo is Nordstrom’s Cafe. For a great price of $5.50, you get a grilled cheese, cup of tomato bisque, grapes, chips, and fresh lemonade. I am not a fan of Campbell’s canned soup, I actually can’t stand the tomato soup. Weird how I hate one type of tomato soup, yet Nordstrom’s tomato soup is one of my favorite foods. If you want to get extra creative, try making your own tomato soup. Unless you’re only recipe is cereal, I’m sure you know how to make a grilled cheese. Here’s a recipe, start cooking now!

True Life: I’m in a Relationship with Pizza

I’m a huge fan of pizza. I don’t think I’ve ever not enjoyed a slice of pizza. My favorite pizza is from Via Vai in Montecito, it’s so thin and the sauce is the perfect blend of spices yet a little sweet. I think there are 3 types of pizza; sophisticated, thin margherita, thick crust with tons of cheese, and greasy fair pizza. If you are a resident of Santa Barbara, here are three places to find these three pizzas. As said before, Via Vai has incredible margherita pizza, but you can also find margherita pizza at Olio E Limone. Giovanni’s located in Montecito and Santa Barbara has a thick crusted cheesy delight, if you’re further interested check out my past post about it here. Another favorite pizza is Rusty’s greasy Hawaiian or sausage pizza; I’m a frequent buyer due to their delivery services. An important addition to every pizza ranch, frowned upon at most fancy Italian restaurants, but definitely welcome at Rusty’s and Giovannis.

Try having a pizza party at home, they’re inexpensive and super fun! Get started by clicking here!

Easy Peasy Mac n’ Cheesy

Tonight a good pal of mine came to my residence to share the meal of dinner with me. She goes by Kogevinas, Mary Laura; or just Mary-Laura. Since she is visiting from her homeland of Siberia, I decided to expose her to the wonderful world of macaroni and cheese. What better way to make food than from the box? Dump some water in a pot, light a match, and pour in your noodles. Wait 8 minutes, taste test, and wallah! Your noodles are ready to be sprinkled with cheesy powdered and splashed with milk and butter. I’ve always been a fan of Kraft mac n’ cheese, but tonight we went with Annie’s. It’s whole grain which is somewhat healthier and said to be organic. Annie’s makes a variety of mac n’ cheese, we made “Bunny Pasta with Yummy Cheese” now that’s what I call advertising! Simple Appetizers To Impress

Majority of my baking inspirations and recipes are found upon the lovely website Pinterest. Everyone in my family is dieting so I can’t find the motivation in cooking and cleaning for one.  However, I collected a handful of recipes anyway to make in the future and to share with you guys. I hope these bring about a rumble in your stomach to test these out, if so please comment with your results!

1.) Avocado, filled with goat cheese, wrapped in prosciutto, sprinkled with chill powder… These healthy, simple wraps are high in nutrients and protein to sustain you for an entire meal, but throw in a toothpick and they make an impressive appetizer.

Click here to get started creating this simple masterpiece.

2.) Bacon and Brie Sweet Potato Skins.. ugh yum.. These little babies are loaded sweet potato skins with brie, bacon, sour cream and chives. A tempting and unforgettable appetizer, snack, or side dish to amaze. Click here for the recipe!

3.) Grilled Zucchini Pizza Slices.. Maybe it’s the cheese and pepperoni that appeal to me. Or anything that has “pizza” in the title intrigues me. This recipe is an easy, much healthier way of making pizza.

Giovanni’s Montecito

Every cito rat has been to Giovanni’s several times, if they haven’t then they are probably a hermit and should explore the greasy world of Gio’s. Giovanni’s is your typical pizzeria for soccer parties, birthdays, or just family pizza night. My friends and I head over in pajamas and play games and eat pizza for hours. Not only do they have great pizza, but they make a mouthwatering meatball sub and some delicious garlic bread. Gio’s is not the place to go if you’re working on your summer bod, but it’s a great way to have a fun, inexpensive dinner (in Montecito), with a big group of friends. You can not leave without a $1.75 soft serve ice cream aka “swirly”. You can choose from vanilla, chocolate, or swirled, definitely get swirled if you haven’t already. Make sure to bring your quarters to play some games and win anywhere from a gum ball to a playstation portable! ImageImage
