Look Before You Touch

I’ve always been a little bit of a germaphobe. Don’t get me wrong, I love dirt and animals, but people don’t realize how unsanitary the world is. To the people that don’t wash your hands after going to the bathroom, I hope it’s ok with you that the chef preparing your food doesn’t either.  If you are part of the minority that wash their hands after using the restroom, you should take the next step into washing hands before eating. Consider the money you just touched while paying for the handheld burrito you’re eating. That dollar is what, seven years old? Imagine the number of hands the money you’ve touched  must have passed through before reaching yours. You may have showered this morning, but the homeless man who used the same dollar to buy booze the other day probably did not. The money you handle carries a ton of bacteria and is often dirtier than a public toilet seat. Point is, wash your hands, preferably with soap.

I’ve been trying to eat somewhat healthy as summer is approaching. My mom eats very healthy and drinks special juices daily but tends to make me food for football players. Considering I have two big brothers, I grew up with their diets and am known to be able to inhale large amounts of food. My boyfriends family calls me “big gurl”. For an after school snack my mom made me apples, cheese, and almonds. I ate all the cheese and apples and then slowly ate the almonds until I was in almond overdose. When I want to eat but I’m not hungry, I eat raw almonds because they fill me up quickly and are not addicting. Raw almonds are filled with protein and essential vitamins. If you don’t like almonds plain, throw slivered almonds into a salad or even a smoothie. Be cautious, don’t go nutty with the nuts if you’re calorie counting because they are high in calories!

Does an Apple a Day REALLY Keep the Doctor Away?

I love apples, they are great in desserts, juices, with peanut butter, cinnamon, or just alone! Studies show apples prevent cancer, tooth decay, and heart diseases. Apple has substances called phytonutrients, and these phytonutrients prevents neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinsonism.  Many people don’t know how good apples are for you, they may be high in sugar but they are low in calories  and loaded with vitamins. Apples are a delicious way to intake your daily dose of essential vitamins. You will be able to get the benefits of these properties individually with other fruits, but an apple combines everything and makes it simpler. The juice of the apples has properties that can kill up to 80% of bacteria. So there you have it, an apple a day also keeps the dentist away! Eating apples is part of balanced and healthy diet than will increase your longevity, so why not have an apple a day.

Foods to Kick Your Cold!

Unfortunately the common cold got me this year, along with many others, here are some healthy foods to help kick it!

-Garlic – Garlic does not just keep vampires and witches away, it fights viral, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic infections. It also enhances the immune system and has anti-tumor features. No wonder Ancient Egyptians considered it holy and used it as currency!

-Oranges – Loaded with Vitamin C, oranges can help boost your immune system and decrease the duration of your cold!

-Yogurt  – Believe it or not yogurt is an important food to eat while sick and after being sick. Yogurt with live cultures contain probiotics which can increase your white blood cell count, boosting your immune system.

-Chicken Noodle Soup –  Studies have shown that chicken noodle soup helps thin mucus secretions and the carbs help maintain energy levels. If you’re going with a can, make sure to check the sodium, high levels of salt can dehydrate your body!

Even if you haven’t caught the cold or flu, stay loaded with Vitamins to keep your immune system strong!

“The Master Cleanse”

It’s important to keep a balanced diet in order to maintain a healthy body and mind.

Every once and a while it’s good to detox to reboot your immune and digestive system.

I recently tried the “Master Cleanse” which is a world wide known detox and diet plan. Many people use this fast to quickly loose weight, Beyonce reportedly lost 20 pounds from it. I decided to try it rather to experience the cleansed feeling many rave about than loose weight. The cleanse consists of lemon juice, cayenne pepper, maple syrup, and water. Studies show it is possible to live off of just those ingredients. Unfortunately I didn’t prepare myself correctly and gave in at around 2:30 to have a salad. Now that I know how to prepare myself, I would like to try it again, mostly to feel accomplished. If you’re interested in trying to detox I along with many recommend this diet if you have the self control to do it. Try the challenge yourself!
